Happily and without intent, I wandered into Lang Antique & Estate Jewelry yesterday and tried on some Victorian mourning rings.

no idea

"I don't think things are ever exactly the way one expects, and I don't think things are ever the way one assumes they are at the moment. What I actually think is that one has no idea of what things are like, ever." Deborah Eisenberg. Art by Irana Douer.

I could have had these shoes for the price of yesterday's parking ticket. From le train bleu.

as far as I'm concerned

"As far as I'm concerned, being any gender is a drag." Patti Smith. I can't stop stop thinking about a recent NPR story on gender identity in the lives of two children and their families. Listen here. Photo by Annie Leibovitz.

updates

Rothko's White Center sold for $73 million, give or take; Mister Lonely, for all its beautiful moments, was terribly slow; the Ryan McGinley show was gorgeous; and Ratio 3 is a pretty cool place.

They're terrific, right? I think, for me, all you need are cool glasses, a striped shirt and a best friend. From New York Magazine Look Book.

unbearable lightness

sense of absence

"I’m not adopted. But that longing and that sense of absence . . . are perhaps other ways of expressing the actualities of my family." Andrea Barett. Marked up manuscript pages at The Paris Review (Yes, there's one from Haruki Murakami).

evidence

2 or 3 Things I Know introduced me to 500 Capp Street and the work of David Ireland. KQED's documentary here.

perdido en el siglo

Today is finally here and I'm exhausted, but excited. I think it will be joyful. Like seeing Manu Chao play at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. But without the dancing.

give me that old fashioned morphine

Somewhere there in the past is Isabelle Eberhardt riding the dunes of the Sahara Desert. Time Magazine calls her "the illegitimate daughter of an illegitimate mother." I expect that's the least of what she was. Jollie Holland says "if it's good enough for Isabelle Eberhardt, it's good enough for me."

Just a quickie today: my childhood friend Joe sent me this lovely bowl cut. Mary Badham played Scout in the movie version of To Kill a Mockingbird. I just listened to a wonderful recording, the audio book read by Sissy Spacek.

The 25th anniversary of Thriller must mean the 25th anniversary of my 13th birthday. Click for video (did you remember it was 14 minutes?).

ballets russes

the ugly earring suggests that there are boutiques as wonderful as Le Train Bleu in SF. There are are, but I'm mad for Le Train Bleu and mad for all things Ballet Russes. Honestly, I've never even been to their store. Or to Stand Up Comedy. But I am from Portland, Oregon. And I did buy this lovely blush-colored blouse from Le Train Bleu's Web site...

a wierd happy accident

The fifty-six children's tales in Exactly, were written by students at Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School in San Francisco. See Dave Eggers' amazing speech from TED here, via lost.

defined and redefined

I'm a sucker for Refinery 29's eBay blog. I even bought an 80's purple chainmail disco purse highlighted on the blog by editorial director, Christene Barberich (though I have yet to wear it). Vintage Surf Towel on eBay.
